Colours, Froms, & Patterns is a self-contained website which serves as a visual guide to the life and works of compartive psychologist Mathilde Hertz. The website itself a re-compilation of Mathilde Hertz’s bibliography as found in ‘Rediscovering a Missing Link: The Sensory Physiologist and Comparative Psychologist Mathilde Hertz (1891 - 1975)’ by Regina Kressley and Seigfired Jaeger (2003).
Mathilde Hertz was a pioneer in the field of comparative psychology and early animal psychology. She studied a wide range of species from hermit crabs to ravens, and most notably bees. Inspired by the principles of Gestalt psychology, her work was particularly focused on the visual perception of animals. Although her work was highly influential in the development of animal psychology, Mathilde Hertz remains an often-overlooked figure in her field.
Drawing on the titles of her publications as well as on her own designs, the website gathers all 32 of her articles each accompanied by it’s own unique illustration. The website also includes a timeline featuring key moments in Hertzs’ life.
Overall the website is a reimagining of Hertzs’ biliography as an interactive design piece, aimed at sparking curiosity and shedding some light on the figure of Mathilde Hertz.
The website was entireley custom coded on the Cargo3 platform using CSS, HTML and JavaScript.
